Ben Hill County Group opposes Coal Plant

FITZGERALD, GA (WALB) – A planned Coal burning power Plant in Ben Hill County is drawing big opposition. County officials say the plant will bring much needed jobs to the area.
But critics say the negatives outweigh the positives, and they want to keep the plant from being built.
They come from all walks of life, but this group of people have one major thing in common. "A coal plant is coming? We don't want this we need to stop this," said Gina Wiggins.
All these Ben Hill County residents are trying to stop a 4.6 billion dollar coal plant from moving into Ben Hill County."Our primary goal is to urge the commissioners to make a resolution to stop this plant from coming here," said Wiggins.
In the meantime, the group is doing everything they can to educate the public on what they consider dangers. "We have lot of farmers who depend on irrigation and this coal plant will use anything from 12 to 16 millions of gallons of water a day," said Wiggins.
The group claims the coal plant will also produce toxins, which may be harmful to your health. "The power is all going to go to Atlanta. We do not need the power here, it is all for Atlanta. They are going to come here and pollute our environment for Atlanta," said Wiggins.
They are using signs, a facebook page, word of mouth and even a petition, "We've collected hundreds and hundreds of signatures and our goal is to get 1,000 signatures."
To try and stop the plant from becoming a reality. The group says they wont go down without a fight. "They think they can roll over and let these people do this to us, and it makes me angry and we are going to fight it," said Wiggins.
The county commission chairman says the plant will bring hundreds of jobs to an area with a 17 percent unemployment rate and 2.1 billion dollars to the community. The Chairman says "We can't afford to let go, but we want the environmentalists voices to be heard."
Permits have not yet been issued, and if they are the group plans on contacting attorneys.
The chairman of the county commission says he thinks more people in the county support the plant than oppose it.
